Rocky View County councillor Al Sacuta was forced to post an apology on his website Nov. 9 following complaints from some area residents over what the councillor described as a joke on his weekly blog.
The complaint, which was directed to Cochrane RCMP and led to an investigation, was over a statement by Sacuta that read, “The county would run much smoother if I were given three things: a backhoe, a gun, permission to use them.”
The incident has resulted in the Bearspaw councillor having to express regret and explain his actions to police, the media and residents.
“There’s a saying that a joke isn’t very good if you have to explain it,” Sacuta said on his website. “Based on that criterion, I have to say the joke was terrible.”
Sacuta said he provided the RCMP with a recorded statement and that the officer ‘seemed satisfied that I wasn’t going to kill anyone.”
Whether the county will take disciplinary action on Sacuta remains to be determined.
