The Boys and Girls Club of Cochrane and Area (BGCCA) is looking for high school recruits for their Rogers Raising the Grade program.

The educational afterschool program is geared towards youth in Grades 9-12. Not only does the two-hour initiative help students with their homework, but it aims to provide guidance for life after high school.

“We really try to make the connection between the work the youth are doing in school and where it can take them,” said David Lalonde, the education manager.

“This program is a valuable resource for our community’s youth. If we don’t use it, we’re going to lose it.”

The free afterschool program runs Tuesdays and Thursday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the local Boys and Girls Club facility.

Lalonde said the first hour of the program is dedicated to homework, while the remainder of the allotted time is spent working on personal projects. Of course, he said there is a little fun mixed in.

Volunteer mentors will be on hand to provide students with guidance and support. Depending upon the personal interests of participants, guest speakers and field trips could be arranged.

Participants are eligible for a $1,000 scholarship if they complete four school semesters as part of Rogers Raising the Grade.

Students who are interested in the program can drop into the Boys and Girls Club to take in a session before committing. Registration can be completed in-person at the club.
