CAES hosting tourism workshop

Festival and event organizers are welcome to attend a free tourism workshop hosted by the Cochrane and Area Events Society (CAES).

Festival and event organizers are welcome to attend a free tourism workshop hosted by the Cochrane and Area Events Society (CAES).

Festival and event tourism growth will be the topic of discussion for the workshop, which is slated for the afternoon of March 22 at the second floor meeting room at Cochrane Toyota. Held over three hours, the event is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.

Running the workshop is Alyssa Watson, a tourism development officer for Alberta Tourism, Parks and Recreation.

“Essentially, it’s a workshop to assist in helping community event and festival organizers convert celebrations into tourism,” said Watson, who will be travelling to Cochrane from Edmonton for the engagement.

“By enhancing the experience of the events, they can draw more people and raise the profile of the community.”

Watson will be speaking for the first hour of the session, touching on topics like branding, packaging, the role of tourism and the characteristics of successful events.

The remaining two hours will be dedicated to small group work, enabling workshop attendees to take the information she presented and apply it to specific events.

“Drawing tourists, be they from Calgary or Calcutta, is a terrific way to grow your town’s economy,” said Brooks Tower of CAES. “It figures then, that the better we get at organizing these events, the better it will be for Cochrane.”

The event is open to festival and event organizers only, and Tower estimated there is room for about eight more registrants.

Anyone interested in taking part in the workshop can contact Tower by calling 403-542-5538.
