Kids Cancer Care is offering young Albertans the chance to make a difference in the lives of children living with cancer this summer.

The Alberta-based non-profit is hiring positions for Camp Kindle – a summer camp for children who have been affected by cancer. Open positions include food services coordinator, lifeguard, leadership and counsellor positions.

Leighana Shockey is the director of operations with Camp Kindle and said the camp’s priority is finding suitable counsellors this season.

“These are folks who are on the frontlines,” Shockey said. “They get to hang out with the kids, work with our user groups and get trained on our rope course.”

Successful candidates need to have standard first aid training, be over the age of 18 and pass a police background check. Aside from that, the camp trains candidates in all other skill areas.

Shockey said working for Camp Kindle is an opportunity not just to enjoy the outdoors in the summer but to make a profound impact on the lives of children who are struggling with cancer.

“Being a camp counsellor is one of the most rewarding jobs a young person can have,” she said. “It’s gratifying to be able to help children grow and to help our children who are dealing with the after-effects of cancer or who are in the middle of cancer treatment. It helps them have an experience where they can just be kids for a week.”

Positions for the spring begin on April 25, with summer positions starting June and autumn positions beginning Aug. 29.
