Canada Day action-packed again this year

Canada Day will have a special meaning for New Canadians as CAES is hosting a citizenship ceremony as part of the day’s festivities.

Canada Day to be celebrated in Cochrane on July 1.

It will be another action-packed Canada Day this year, with plenty of opportunities for residents to get involved as volunteers.

Part of this year’s Canada Day celebrations in Cochrane will be a lacrosse demonstration – our national summer sport.

In 1994 Parliament passed the National Sports of Canada Act which declared lacrosse to be "Canada's National Summer Sport" with hockey as Canada's National Winter Sport.

The Town of Cochrane and Cochrane & Area Events Society (CAES) are collaborating in the planning and hosting of Canada Day, to be held at Mitford Park. The festivities start at noon and end with lighting up the sky at 11 pm.

The action starts off with a lacrosse exhibition game featuring The Calgary Chill, a Junior B team.  They are involved in an exciting fund-raising project aimed at equipping and promoting the sport in Africa and will have a table set up with more information.

During the afternoon, expect all the usual popular activities such as children’s games, giant inflatable activity centres, petting zoo, pony rides, face painting, bubble balls and more, all through the park.

The Pergola Stage will be the centre for children’s entertainment.

An exciting stage line-up planned during the day, with the ever-popular Calgary Stampede Band of Outriders returning, along with Cochrane favourites Smoking Aces and Cochrane Sings.

Canada Day will have a special meaning for New Canadians as CAES is hosting a citizenship ceremony as part of the day’s festivities.

The Canada Day evening Concert Series includes Calgary rockers Hi-Tops and pop/country-rock music performer Jeff Catto.

The headliner is Canada’s Country Girl, Kendra Kay. A seven-time Manitoba Country Music Association award winner, her 2023 debut album hit the number one spot on Canadian Country iTunes charts.

All the bands can be enjoyed from the comfort of a lawn chair or a table with friends at the Half Hitch Beer Tent.  This year’s Food Truck lineup has some newcomers and welcomes back old favourites and as always, Mini Donuts.

As with previous years, Cochranites are encouraged to take the Southland Shuttles or Colt as there is no parking at Mitford Park or on the street nearby.

More details on shuttles will be published in The Eagle and on social media prior to Canada Day. The CAES website will have details on accessibility in our FAQ section.

CAES is on Facebook and Instagram, liking their pages allows access to automatic updates.

As with every event in town, CAES relies on volunteers and they are asking anyone with even a couple of hours to help out, to sign up at Cochraneevents.ca.
