On March 27, a mob — cash in hand — is set to descend upon Cochrane’s Historic Downtown to support and increase awareness of a local business.
The Cochrane Cash Mob is recruiting residents to attend the community’s first mob — a group of people who venture into small, locally owned businesses ready to spend cash.
The initial mob is scheduled for March 27. Anyone interested in attending is invited to meet in the Rexall parking lot at 6 p.m.; the chosen business will be revealed at that time.
“This is an initiative to keep downtown alive,” said Vivian Cox, organizer of the mob. “It can be a challenge for small businesses when big box stores open in the community.”
Participants are asked to spend at least $20 during the mob.
As the former executive director of the Stony Plain and District Chamber of Commerce, Cox said she has seen the effects of cash mobs firsthand. In the 14 months of cash mobs venturing throughout the community, about $16,000 in sales were generated.
“Twenty dollars doesn’t seem like a lot, but it’s not just the purchases made during the mob that makes a difference,” said Cox. “The mob increases foot traffic into the small business, which raises awareness.”
