New faces in town are invited to connect with locals and learn more about Cochrane at the Cochrane Immigrant Services Committee’s (CISC) Newcomers Welcome event on Oct. 5.
From 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., guests can visit the Cochrane Public Library to learn about the different services and support groups that are available for new residents, while also enjoying refreshments and a raffle.
CISC Ambassador, Paul Singh, said that their group has hosted the event since 2016. With two events a year, one in winter and the other in fall, he explained that this follows the seasons where people generally move into town.
“It’s meant to welcome people who move in the summer time, or early September before the school year to give them an idea or information, and to welcome them,” Singh said. “Like what’s Cochrane and what services are available and where they can ask for help.”
He adds that CISC plays a critical role in for international newcomers, but also new residents from across Canada better connect with the different resources and services through the help of their partners.
“I would say it’s a great way of educating or providing the right information,” he said. “Like how to apply for a SIN number, where they can find services for their partner, where to register if their kids need to go to school, medical centres, or even ask things about settlement.”
With the event set for this weekend, Singh said he looks forward to meeting the new faces in the community.
“It gives time to meet new people who come from different parts of the world,” he said. “It gives an opportunity to show how welcoming our town is and how we can help each other to succeed.”
Overall, Singh said the CISC would like to give a special thanks to all of their partners who plan to attend the event, and for also providing the space for this year’s event.
“And to all the volunteers who come and make this event a success, and the CISC organizing Committee,” Singh said.
