The Town of Cochrane has purchased a 26-acre parcel of land from Rocky View County for $5 million, securing one of the last undeveloped stretches of riverfront along the Bow River.

The acquisition, approved by council, is a major step in preserving Cochrane’s character and planning for a future guided by community values.

“This is the last piece of undeveloped riverfront property in Cochrane,” said Mayor Jeff Genung. “By securing this land, we are ensuring it reflects the priorities, values and vision of our community. This is about building our future, together.”

The property is located beside the Bow RiversEdge Campground, Jim Uffelman Memorial Park and the growing Greystone neighbourhood. It was previously used as a gravel pit and, more recently, as a highway maintenance yard, including salt storage.

Because of its industrial past, the land will require a remediation plan approved by Alberta Environment and Protected Areas. Environmental monitoring and remediation work are expected to begin shortly after the land transfer.

“This acquisition reinforces council’s commitment to our community’s aspirations,” said Mike Derricott, chief administrative officer. “It positions us to proactively plan for livability, sustainability and a vibrant economy — all driven by the voices of our residents.”

The town said the purchase supports long-term goals of preserving open space, improving quality of life and investing in future public amenities and infrastructure.

Future development of the site will include public engagement to ensure it reflects community needs.

“This marks the start of a broader conversation about Cochrane’s future — one shaped by the people who call this community home,” said Genung.
