Nominations opened Feb. 24 for the annual Cochrane Community Awards and will continue through April 11.
Winning Cochranites who demonstrate outstanding achievements through community leadership and spirit in the community will be awarded in a ceremony at the Cochrane RancheHouse May 25.
The town-facilitated event is heavily reliant on the feedback from the community, as well as the volunteer commitment of the selection committee.
“We have a presence on the committee, but the bulk are community members,” said town spokesperson, Laurie Drukier.
“This is a fabulous way to celebrated the people who do fantastic things in our community…this event wouldn’t happen without the participation and enthusiasm of the (volunteer) committee.”
The volunteer committee include chair Valerie McCracken, Glen Boles, Shana Bruder, Gordon Davies, Rebecka Freels, Betty Anne Jansen, Gaynor Levisky, Roxanne Mackintosh, Sandra Robin and Mona Sylvestre.
The 12 award categories include Mayor and Council’s Order of Cochrane; Business of the Year; Employer of the Year; Community Builder of the Year; Ambassador of the Year; Citizen of the Year; Senior of the Year; Education in Action; Volunteer Group of the Year; Pathfinder of the Year; Youth of the Year; and Newsmaker of the Year.
Last year, 32 nominations were made.
Drukier said there has been a steady annual increase in the number of nominations.
