Highway 1A Improvement update
The Town of Cochrane is set to start the next phase of construction on the Highway 1A improvement project, which will include installing utility upgrades beneath Centre Ave between Highway 1A and Powel Street. To complete this phase of the project, the Town will be detouring southbound traffic on Centre Avenue to First Avenue West and then onto First Street West, back to Centre Ave. Delays should be expected and motorists are asked to reduce speed and exercise extra caution while diving in the area. More updates are anticipated to be released as the project proceeds.
Backpack program
The Family Resource Network is partnering with the Kiwanis Club of Cochrane and Staples for the 2021 Backpack Program event. The event, for school children from preschool through Grade 12, is aiming to give youth in need the necessary supplies they need to be successful at school. On Thursday (Aug. 19) from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Family Resource Network, families can drop by to enjoy some activities, treats, get a back-to-school photo taken and pickup at a backpack stuffed full with school supplies for the upcoming school year. Registration for the event is mandatory and can be done in-office at the Family Resource Network at 127 First Avenue West, or by calling 403-851-2265.
Animal shelter seeking donations
The Cochrane and Area Humane Society is currently out of wet puppy food and is asking for donations from the community. The shelter is home to more than 50 puppies in its care and needs wet puppy food to keep the pups happy and healthy. Canned kitten food is another urgently needed item at the shelter. The Humane Society operates largely on donations made by the community and often needs items to ensure the animals in its care are receiving the highest level of care possible. A wish list of needed items can be found online at cochranehumane.ca/. Donations can be dropped off in the donation bin located in front of the shelter.
