Cochrane pays respect to war veterans at Remembrance Day ceremony

Around 200 people paid their respects at the Cochrane Cenotaph Remembrance Day ceremony Nov. 11.

Around 200 people paid their respect in-person at the Cochrane Cenotaph Remembrance Day ceremony Nov. 11.

Legion Branch 15 past president Darla Gullons, who emceed the event, started with a land acknowledgement to honour Canada's First Nations, Metis and Inuit people.

Gullons added that it was heartwarming for her to see how many people were there to gather and honour Canada's war veterans safely.

"Over the last 20 months, the world has gone through this cataclysmic pandemic that has changed our lives," she said, her voice breaking with emotion. "Some have died and some have become so afraid to leave their own homes ... Some of us have given up some of our freedoms to protect our loved ones. The young men who served went one step further and gave us their lives so that they could protect their loved ones. That is the ultimate sacrifice, far and above anything we have endured in the last year-and-a-half."

Wreaths were also laid at the ceremony, followed by an opportunity for Cochranites to pay their respects and pin poppies on them.

The event was live streamed to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 15 Facebook page as well as through Urban Casual's website.
