Cochrane RCMP responding to number of collisions on Highway 1A

A number of collisions have been reported east of town on the Highway 1A due to poor weather conditions and tow trucks are on scene to clear blocked eastbound lanes

Cochrane RCMP are responding to numerous collisions on Highway 1A east of town and are advising motorists to avoid the area if possible.

Reduced visibility and icy road conditions due to snowfall have caused several vehicles to spin out on the road or enter ditches, according to a press release from RCMP.

Tow trucks are on scene to remove spun-out vehicles blocking eastbound lanes, resulting in slow moving traffic.

511 Alberta sent a tweet warning of numerous collisions and vehicles in ditches, as well.

"Expect significant delays in the area," the provincial agency said.

RCMP are reminding motorists to drive with caution while weather conditions remain poor, which includes reducing your speed, maintaining space between surrounding vehicles on the road and being expectant of delays.

No serious injuries or fatalities were reported in the press release and no further information is currently available according to RCMP media relations.

An update is expected to be provided once traffic flow has resumed.

More to come.
