A weekend fundraiser held by Jumping Pound Ridge Developments (JPRD) raised just under $18,000 for the construction of a new playground in the southwest Cochrane neighbourhood.

Cassandra Elward, an accountant with Rosetree Developments (parent company for JPRD), said the two-day event (April 27-28) ‘went fantastic,’ with over 200 people attending in total.

The fundraiser consisted of a silent auction, barbecue, a 3-on-3-hockey competition and a visit from Calgary Stampeders’ Rob Cote.

Items auctioned off included movie tickets, children’s toys, coupons, an iPad Mini and a trip to Colorado to see a Denver Broncos football game.

The play area that will be constructed will boast a large play structure, green space, picnic tables with fire pits and a skating rink.

The price tag for the playground is $766,000, and with last weekend’s $17,900 draw, the residents of Jumping Pound Ridge are just a shade over $42,000 away from their fundraising goal.

Elward said residents plan on holding garage sales and some other events in the near future to raise more money for the project.

A grant application must also be submitted by the end of this summer to the Cochrane Fire Fighters Community Foundation, which, in addition to manning the grill during the weekend fundraiser, will help build the outdoor play area.

Slokker Canada West donated the land where the playground will be constructed. Visit jumpingpoundridge.com for more information.
