Conservative John Barlow wins Macleod byelection

John Barlow, the Conservative candidate for June 30’s Macleod byelection, was victorious, garnering approximately 69 per cent of the vote.

John Barlow, the Conservative candidate for June 30’s Macleod byelection, was victorious, garnering approximately 69 per cent of the vote.

Barlow, the former editor for Great West Newspaper’s Okotoks Western Wheel, said his main concern moving forward would be to advocate to the government for money for flood mitigation.

Barlow, 42, beat Liberal contender Dustin Fuller, who received 17 per cent of the vote.

The byelection was held because Macleod was left without federal representation after Ted Menzies stepped down from his post in November.

In the 2011 federal election, Menzies took 77 per cent of the vote, with the NDP party in second with 10 per cent.

Voter turnout for last Monday’s byelection appears to be in the area of 20 per cent.
