A local Cub Scouts pack is working to ensure blue birds in the Cochrane area have places to nest.

Members of Pack A, a subgroup of Cochrane 1st Scouts, led by ‘Head Wolf’ Jason Costen, have installed just over 20 nesting boxes at the Cochrane Ranche historic site as part of their group’s conservation-focused mandate.

The group reached out to Andrew Stiles, author of the blog ‘Calgary Birdman,’ who provides nesting boxes to groups interested in bird conservation efforts. Members painted the boxes and readied them for installation.

Originally the boxes were going to be installed on a local farmer’s fence, but were then informed that the fence would be removed. The Cochrane Ranche site then stepped in and is now allowing the group to set the boxes on the property.

The group is also working with the Cochrane Ecological Institute and Cochrane Wildlife Reserve Society in its efforts to increase caribou numbers. Cub scouts will assist in identifying grasslands in a specific area the Ecological Institute looks to release the caribou, located along Grand Valley Road northwest of Cochrane.

Cub Scouts members range from eight to 10 years old. Members earn badges through achievement in different skill or knowledge areas. The organization focuses on youth development through outdoor activities and community engagement.
