The Town of Cochrane is set to remove 20 highway-adjacent trees to support the province's highway project.
"Council and administration continue to work with Alberta Transportation to remove barriers and pave the path to see this project advance," Mayor Jeff Genung said in a statement regarding the Highway 1A/22 interchange project.
Surveying of the area was completed Wednesday, Feb. 23.
The majority of mature trees will be protected, the town said in a statement Feb. 24. This will ensure key ecosystem components will be preserved.
A biologist will also review each tree to ensure there's no established bird nests. Once cleared, tree removal is slated to commence shortly after.
Alberta Transportation said formal construction of the interchange is set to start in fall 2022.
