The Bragg Creek Ducks Unlimited committee has raised $550,332 over the last 20 years, and they hope people will open their wallets once again to support their wetland conservation efforts.
John Lyster, Bragg Creek Ducks Unlimited committee chairperson, and his committee are hosting a fundraising dinner and auction at the Bragg Creek Community Centre Jan. 31.
“Celebrate our 20th anniversary in Bragg Creek by attending the dinner this Saturday,” said Lyster. “Come out and have a great time and a lot of fun.”
Ducks Unlimited Canada is a registered charity and recognized leader in wetland conservation.
Ed Houck, senior manager of events and volunteer relations Alberta for Ducks Unlimited Canada, said the purpose of his organization is to conserve and protect wetlands.
“The natural wetlands are in serious threat from urban encroachment, adverse farming actions and drainage,” said Houck.
Some people in his community, who attend the Bragg Creek fundraiser each year, are as concerned about the wetlands as he is, said Lyster.
“Wetlands are extremely important for water filtration, recreation, and they even help against flooding because they act like a sponge to soak up water,” said Lyster. “How can you not believe in the cause?”
Within 150 kilometers of Bragg Creek, Ducks Unlimited has 158 projects and has secured 101,266 acres of habitat with a total investment to date of nearly $45 million across Canada, according to Houck.
Lyster said, over the years, Bragg Creek businesses have been great in their support by not only attending the annual fundraising event, but also sponsoring and donating auction items.
“Our conservation efforts would not be possible without people like (Lyster) and his team who work every year in their community to run these fundraisers,” said Houck. “Ducks Unlimited could not do what we do without these dedicated volunteers.”
