Visit St. Andrew’s United Church on Saturday, March 12, for the 8th annual Tea with Local Producers.
Happening from 10 a.m.-noon, the event provides a conversational opportunity for consumers to connect with local producers, ask questions, and provide feedback. Additionally, it allows producers to explain their process in growing/raising their products.
Roughly 8-10 producers have confirmed their attendance for the event. This includes people who grow fruits and vegetables and people who raise cattle, lamb, and chicken.
The idea behind the event came from Cochrane local Mireille Hamel and has turned into an annual meeting that supports small family operations and helps them connect to those who wish to purchase food locally.
According to Jackie Skrypnek, one of the event’s organizers, attendees are enlightened as to what goes into producing their food, the manner in which it is produced, and even lesser-understood challenges producers face. On the producers’ end, they get a chance to hear from consumers about what they are looking for in products and may even choose to adapt what they plant or raise in accordance.
Skrypnek also pointed out that with the cost of imported items increasing, this provides an alternative to relying on potentially expensive, imported food.
Admission for the event is free but donations will be accepted. Childcare will be provided as well.
