Grant recommendations from the Cochrane Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) for 2014 were approved by town council April 28, totalling $127,000.

Grants are distributed through a partnership between the FCSS and United Way of Calgary and Area. In total, $199,000 was requested.

Some of the larger grants were given to Big Brothers Big Sisters ($20,000), the Boys and Girls Club of Cochrane and Area’s Cochrane Youth Association ($20,000), Western Rocky View Resource Centre’s CAR program ($15,000), community support program ($13,000) and Roots of Empathy program ($10,200) and Cochrane and Area Victim Services ($12,000).

Remaining recipients of grant monies included the Cochrane Activettes, Cochrane CookHouse, Glenbow Ranch Park Foundation, Seniors for Kids Society, Seniors on the Bow and Tapestry of Women.

Cochrane FCSS handed out $30,000 of the $127,000.

The largest request came from the Boys and Girls Club, which asked for $75,000. The money they received will be used for youth programs and subsidies.

Of the United Way’s $97,000 it gave out, $7,000 came by way of a donation, which was garnered from a fundraiser held by Cochrane Shoppers Drug Mart.

The funds come from a combination of a yearly grant and individual direct donations.
