Santa’s not-so-little helpers - off-duty members of Cochrane Fire Services - are carrying on their Christmas Eve tradition of carting St. Nick around town atop a fire truck Christmas Eve.
“It sets the Christmas mood for the kids, ” said organizing firefighter Brad Hoey. “It all started when I was a kid in Cranbrook (B.C.) - the fire department would take Santa around town. Now that I work for the Cochrane department, it’s a tradition I wanted to start here. ”
This marks the third year - with an exception of last year - that firefighters will dazzle up Engine 151 Alpha and wheel Santa around town to wave to Cochrane kids and spread Christmas cheer throughout the town in the final hours before he departs for the North Pole to gear up for his worldwide midnight gift giving.
Firefighting elves this year are Dave Levisky and Harold Phillips - manning the machine that will safely showcase Santa.
All participating firefighters are pitching in during their spare time, a collaborative volunteer effort through the Cochrane Firefighters Community Foundation.
