The Cochrane Firefighters Association will host its third year of flapjacks and fire trucks for the annual pancake breakfast Sept. 12 at the fire hall parking lot from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., located at 20 Grande Blvd.

“It went really well last year – we had a way bigger crowd than anticipated,” said Jeff Avery, Lt. safety codes officer and Cochrane firefighter.

“The weather is looking pretty nice [this weekend] – we are expecting a pretty big crowd.”

Firefighters encourage guests to bring the whole family, as there will also be a bouncy castle, open house at the fire hall, fire truck tours, face painting by MJ and Pippi’s face painting and entertainment.

“Everything is free, but any donations we get, even if it is just a toonie, goes a long way and everything stays in the community,” Avery said.

The firefighters will give some of the donations to Rock The Waves, a fundraising campaign for the new pool/curling facility, and also be raising monies for a new Cochrane Firefighters Foundation program to make funds available for underprivileged children to continue to play local sports.

“It will essentially allow coaches to identify players that could not return to their sport(s) in the preseason and allow kids in financial hardship to have access to monies to pay for their admission fee,” said firefighter Dave Levisky in an email.

The family-friendly event will also have a vehicle extrication demo, where a firefighter will show off the tools they use in the situation – “We’ll put on a show, breaking the glass, cutting the roof off and more,” Avery said.

The communities volunteer firefighters have also rounded up guest pancake flippers, such as Cochrane mayor Ivan Brooker, MP Blake Richards, MLA Cam Westhead, as well as several of the town’s councillors.

“It gets bigger and better every year,” Avery said. “Everyone is welcome to come out and check out what we do and support the community.”
