Givyup helps pair of charities

It’s a low-key holiday season for Givyup – the fundraising initiative that seeks to assist charities through social networking.

For the second year, the Boys and Girls Club of Cochrane and Area along with Calgary Reads will be the two charities that benefit from the social medium, launched by Jeff Couillard, co-chair of Cochrane Sustainability Partners Uniting Resources and brother-in-law Alex Bruton.

The concept is simple: people who want for little can donate their Christmas or birthday or any other celebration to one of Givyup’s charities, directing their friends, family or co-workers to make an online donation to their selected charity in lieu of receiving a material present.

“Last Christmas we raised right around $5,000 for the two charities…after Christmas, we quietly put two birthdays through the site, one for someone’s 65th birthday, and another for a first birthday for a little guy….” explained Couillard, adding that while 2013 wasn’t a big year for developing Givyup, the duo have plans to ramp up the initiative in 2014.
