The Glenbow Ranch Park Foundation (GRPF) kicked off 2014 with a generous donation from a long-time supporter of the Glenbow Ranch Provincial Park.

As a result, foundation staff is planning a summer full of programming for park visitors.

Andy Crooks, the current chair of the GRPF board of directors, made a personal donation of $20,000 in support of the Kids and Family programs offered by the park’s foundation in the upcoming year.

Crooks, former CEO of the organization, said he hopes his donation will spur others into supporting the development of the park and its programs.

“The GRPF is very pleased to have received this generous gift,” said Susan de Caen, the organization’s executive director, in a media release. “The funding will allow us to provide another great summer of outdoor educational and recreational activities for kids and their families.”

Specifically, de Caen said the funding would help cover the costs of materials and staffing.

This summer the park is offering a number of kid and family programming, including day camps, family activities, along with nature-themed programs.

The GRPF’s Foothills Fescue Research Institute has been renamed the Shell Grasslands Recovery Project, following a month of public input.

The public vote for the new moniker began in December. Ending at midnight on Jan. 12, the contest drew 256 online voters. Of those, 111 selected the winning name.

The Shell Grasslands Recovery Project will continue on the path of the Institute, researching and developing educational projects on conservation and restoration of native grasslands.

Online voters were entered into a draw to win a $100 Shell gas gift card and a GRPF family membership. Shirley Pinter was the lucky winner.
