The work of the students of Glenbow Elementary School’s Roots and Wings program is not going unnoticed.
First, the program and its participants were the recipients of a national innovation award. Now, the healing message behind the program’s Warrior Paint Project has captured the attention of students living in a community a few hours outside of Edmonton.
In Frog Lake, Alta., a Grade 7/8 student group has raised $300.00 for the Iyahrhe Nakoda Food Bank Society.
The students, from the Frog Lake First Nation’s Chief Napeweaw Comprehensive School, have been selling the Warrior Paint greeting cards.
The Warrior Paint: Painting to Fight Hunger initiative is the result of the creativity and hard work of the Grade 1-5 students in the school’s Roots to Wings program.
The greeting cards feature the artwork of the children — colourful images that incorporate visuals of their ancestors.
With six cards in each set, the cost is $15.
They can be purchased at Sobeys Cochrane, Town and Country Auto Parts, Trailblazers, Bentleys Books and Glenbow School.
On Dec. 17, the program presented the food bank with a cheque for more than $2,000.
