Cochrane firefighters battled a grass fire on March 24, stopping the blaze from before it could claim any homes.
The fire took place approximately three kilometres north of Highway 1A on Horse Creek Rd. and took Cochrane Fire Services around an hour to douse.
Fire captain Jory Jenson said when they arrived at the scene around 4 p.m. flames had engulfed about one acre of land, but eventually spread to nearly eight.
“It was a little guy to start,” said Jenson, explaining that with dry grass and windy conditions, the fire was a little tricky to get under control.
Jenson said that at one point the fire was moving toward a stack of about 60 haybales, but firefighters were able to dig in and stop the spread.
Cochrane was the lone department to deal with the blaze, which claimed part of a fence that lines Horse Creek Road with the land.
Jenson reminds residents that with spring looming, grass will begin to be exposed and winds can pick up quickly, increasing the risk of a grass fire to spread.
