The fitness ‘barre’ has been set at Snap Dance Studios in Cochrane with the studio offering adult barre fitness classes starting this month.

Following in the lines of the popular workout trends of pole dance fitness and zumba, this workout uses dance as its inspiration.

“It is a great class,” said studio owner Courtney Sproule, pointing out that the fitness trend is huge in Calgary right now with studios popping up all over the city in the last year.

But to her knowledge, no one is offering the class yet in Cochrane.

Sproule said their ballet instructor at the studio, Terra Niehaus, recently trained with Booty Barre Fitness and they thought it would be a great idea to offer the classes at Snap Dance Studios.

It is a workout that combines pilates, yoga and ballet. It is designed to tone, improve flexibility, posture, balance and increase cardiovascular endurance. The classes use a ballet barre, but Sproule said participants are asked to bring two hand weights between one and three pounds and one pilates ball.

Although the class uses the ballet barre, that doesn’t mean you need to have any dance experience, according to Sproule.

“The beauty of it is that anyone can do it,” she said, adding that the class is, however, for adults only.

Sproule said the class is unique in that it keeps your mind working, as well as your body.

“It is like dance – you have to learn the steps and the exercise while you’re working your body. It’s not just one particular style, it has the fusion of pilates, yoga and the dance. I think that is why it’s so popular,” Sproule said.

Two classes will be offered and both are 10-week sessions. There will be a Tuesday class that runs from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. starting Jan. 20 for $160 and a Wednesday class from 9:15 – 10 p.m. starting Jan. 21 for $130.
