The driver of a pick-up truck, a male in his mid-20s, who was struck by a semi truck southbound on Hwy 22 (near Hwy 1) May 19, was last reported to be in hospital in serious, non-life threatening condition.
The collision took place around 3:20 p.m. Reports indicate the pick-up truck driver had pulled over on the shoulder of the highway and ventured on the road to do a U-turn when he was struck by the semi.
Cochrane RCMP were on scene, as were EMS and Rocky View Fire Services. The portion along Hwy 22 between Hwy 1 and Hwy 8 was shut down until around 9 p.m.
The driver of the semi truck was not injured. A dog in the pick-up truck had to be extracted by emergency crews and was taken in for veterinary care.
No charges have been laid so far and an investigation is ongoing.
According to Sgt. White with the Cochrane RCMP, it was a quieter May Long Weekend than usual — perhaps in part due to the weather.
Throughout the long weekend, 200 charges were laid (including traffic violations; some resulting from CheckStops set up near McLean Creek) including three impaired drivers.
The areas of McLean Creek and Waiparous have been notorious in previous years for attracting ‘rowdy campers’, leaving behind excessive garbage and trail destruction. Increased patrols from provincial wildlife officers and RCMP in recent years appear to be resulting in a decline in such activities.
A 57-year-old jewelry shop owner, Trung Van Nguyen, is facing multiple charges in relation to allegedly selling more than $20,000 in jewelry and coins stolen from Cochrane homes.
Police received tips March 17 that the store, located in the 8100 block of Beddington Blvd, N.W., was selling goods that had been stolen from Cochrane homes.
Nguyen was arrested and charged last week, following a search warrant executed at the business.
He has been charged with ‘trafficking in stolen property under $5,000’; ‘possession of stolen property under $5,000 for the purpose of trafficking’; and ‘possession of stolen property over $5,000’.
