Clean, eat, fish.
Those are the simple steps local fly-fishing guide Andrew Watson has for the Bow River cleanup this weekend.
Watson of Shoreline Risers Guiding Company is seeking as many volunteers as possible to help clean up along the banks of the Bow River this Saturday (Sept. 26).
This is one of several cleanups Watson has hosted since earlier this year – inspired because of the aftermath of the 2013 flood destruction remains along the riverbanks.
The flood remains can impact the lifespan and populations of the various fish species living in the Bow River. The garbage is also risky for recreational users and waders.
“[The cleanup] brings the community together and [to] have respect for where we live,” Watson said.
Watson hosted the first Bow River cleanup in May and said it went really well.
“The first one went pretty good – it helps [the community] stay clean and safe,” Watson said.
The local guide invites anyone interested in helping to meet Sept. 26 at 10 a.m. at the Mitford Park parking lot. Organizers will have cleanup supplies on hand.
Volunteers will clean, eat and fish. Watson said the first cleanup had a barbecue but the organizer did not receive any food donations this time around, so he encourages everyone to pack a lunch.
Once the cleanup is done, Watson invites everyone to bring their fly-fishing gear and spend the afternoon along the banks fishing.
“Everyone is welcome to come,” Watson said.
