The sixth annual Kimmett Cup is right around the corner, running at Mitford Pond and the Spray Lake Sawmills (SLS) Family Sports Centre Jan. 17-18.
While the temperatures have been climbing, organizers are confident the ice at Mitford Pond will be ready for action this weekend.
“We’re always looking for more volunteers,” said Kimmett Cup organizer, Joe MacLellan.
“We’re looking for people to come down and be a part of the day, whether it’s just being a fan or being a volunteer,” said fellow cup organizer Reid Kimmett.
Some 48 teams, or 428 players, will be lacing up, stick in hand, for the annual charity hockey tourney; the event is one of the biggest fundraisers through the Lindsay Leigh Kimmett Memorial Foundation.
The foundation is in honour of the late Dr. Lindsay Kimmett, whose charitable spirit and love for children is carried on through the foundation.
The charitable recipient this year will be the Children’s Wish Foundation; the goal is to raise $100,000.
Live auction items up for grabs include a Calgary Flames game dinner package and paintings created by children through the Children’s Wish Foundation.

Reid said the charity choice is a perfect fit.
“I think it just matches what the tournament is and what Lindsay was...this charity helps carry on the work Lindsay would have gone on to do, had she not passed away,” said Reid.
