If you have a little one that will be enrolled into kindergarten next year you may want to read the fine print as acceptability requirements will be changing next fall to comply with the new Education Act's standardized age of entry.

"Starting in the fall of 2020, students must be five years of age by December 31 of the year they begin kindergarten," explains Greg Luterbach, superintendent of schools at Rocky View Schools (RVS). "For the 2020/21 school year, kindergarten students will have to be born between Jan.1, 2015 and Dec. 31, 2015, to ensure processes are aligned with the new act."

Beginning Jan. 13, 2020, schools within RVS will start accepting registrations for the 2020/2021 school year. In mid-December families of future kinder goers are urged to visit the RVS' website to learn of early registration activities schools will have.

"Attending an open house is a great way for new families to learn more about RVS's play-based approach to kindergarten programming. There will be opportunities to meet the teachers, tour the school and learn how we set the foundation for our youngest learners to build the skills they need to become confident, resilient, lifelong learners," said Luterbach.

Within Rocky View, kindergarten is offered as a half-day program in most schools. Based on criteria provided by parents during the registration process, children will be placed in the appropriate morning or afternoon program.

The previous requirements noted a student entering kindergarten had to be five years of age by the last day of February of the year the child would begin kindergarten. If they were not, they would be enrolled the following year.

Early registration will allow families to have a smooth transition and provides RVS the necessary information to plan student load accordingly. School designations and grade configurations can be found on the RVS website. Families are encouraged to register their children through SchoolEngage, the online registration system.

If you prefer to register in person you may do so at the school or at RVS' Education Centre at 2651 Chinook Winds Drive, SW, Airdrie. Make sure you bring proof of your child's age, legal name and address.
