On May 9 at 2 p.m. residents of Cochrane are invited to celebrate “National Day of Honour,” at the Cochrane Legion Cenotaph to commemorate the work done in Afghanistan by the Canadian men and women who served.

The special day remembering the efforts and sacrifices of the troops was formally announced March 18 by Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

The Cochrane event will be joined by members of the Royal Canadian Legion, Cochrane Branch #15 and Member of Parliament Blake Richards.

“This day will serve to honour and preserve the legacy of the Afghanistan mission as conducted and supported by our Canadian Armed Forces, the people of Canada, and most importantly, the families of our soldiers who had to bear so much while their loved ones were deployed,” said Richards in a press release.

While the ceremony is not expected to last longer than half an hour, concluding at 2:30 p.m., the proceedings will host remarks from dignitaries, followed by an Act of Remembrance.

“The mission in Afghanistan was the largest deployment of the Canadian Forces in a generation, involving thousands of our brave men and women from coast to coast,” said Richards.

“Through their sacrifices, millions of people have been liberated from an oppressive regime and have the opportunity to live in freedom.”
