Dig out those primary-coloured building blocks and stir up your best creative ideas; entries have opened for the third annual Cochrane Lego Competition.

Deadline to enter the building contest is March 13. The competition, which is open to children 14 years and under, is set to run April 11 and 12 at the St. Andrew’s United Church.

“The kids get really excited to participate and to see each others ideas,” said Billy MacLeod, who founded the contest with her husband two years ago. “The competition is something fun for the kids to do, but it also allows them to use their creativity.”

In its first two years, the competition attracted about 150 entries. This year, MacLeod is hoping to attract 200 Lego masterpieces.

Entries are divided into three categories: buildings/structures/landscapes/scenes, vehicles and transportation and creative invention/other.

The categories will be judged by age: three years and under, four to six year olds, seven to nine year olds, 10 to 12 year olds, and 12 to 14 year olds. Each competitor is able to enter three submissions, but only one in each category.

Prizes will be awarded to first-, second- and third-place finishers in each category and age division.

There’s only one rule: imaginations only.

“Entrants are allowed to use pieces from kits, but they aren’t allowed to just put Lego kits together,” said MacLeod. “The kids should be coming up with their own ideas.”

Submissions must be dropped off at the church between 4-6 p.m., April 11. Judging will commence at 6 p.m. The public will be invited to check out the creative entries April 12, between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Entry forms can be picked up at St. Andrew’s United Church or on the Cochrane Lego Competition Facebook page. A fee of $7 is required for all entries, with the exception of those in the three years and under division. Cheques can be made payable to Billy MacLeod.

Entries, along with cash or cheques, can be mailed or dropped off at St. Andrew’s United Church — 128 First Street East.
