This Halloween weekend the library will be hosting a variety of events for different age groups. The Nan Boothby Memorial Library will hold a Halloween Movie night for children and a Teen Takeover night for teenagers.

Librarian Sara Kundrik said she wanted events for all ages this spooky season.

“I personally enjoy working with teens a lot - they are very imaginative and just starting to shift their world view into more of an adult mode and it is really important to keep them reading throughout, ” Kundrik said.

While the Teen Takeover is not necessarily a literary activity, it is a way to get the older youth in the door, the librarian explained.

The inaugural Teen Takeover will have food and drinks, with zombie make-up application available, a dance instructor to practice for a “Thriller ” flash mob later that day, and a photo booth.

“It is kind of just hang out and socialize, and a casual way to enjoy the library - there is a dance instructor from Snap Dance Studio to give dance instructions and we are going to have some zombie make-up, (and) one of the pizza places in town was kind enough to donate some food, ” Kundrik said.

Organizers are hopeful that after the event, it gets teenagers interested in getting more involved with the library and its programs.

The more kid-friendly event will be a Halloween Movie night, showing The Nightmare Before Christmas. Children are encouraged to wear their spooky costumes and registration is required so organizers can plan for enough ice-cream to go around.

“I think it'll be a nice, fun night and a nice family event for people to spend a cold dark night inside doing something warm and safe and nice with their kids, ” Kundrik said.

The library began its pumpkin-carving contest Oct. 26 and is welcoming carvers to submit their pumpkins up until Oct. 30, when judging will take place at noon. There are four different age categories with a chance to win a MacKay's Ice Cream gift card.

“We are just trying to get (people) through the doors and enjoying themselves, ” Kundrik said.

The Halloween Movie night takes place Oct. 29 from 6-8 p.m. with sign-up required. The Teen Takeover is inviting teens on Oct. 30 from 2-4 p.m. for a couple hours of fun at the library.
