Local Scouts selling trees to subsidize costs

This year, why not leave the axe at home and venture down to the Rexall Drug Store to pick out your Christmas tree. Not only will buyers bag themselves a quality tree, but they’ll be supporting a fundraising effort by local boy scouts.

With Jack Pine or Douglas Fir trees to choose from, buyers can pick the size and shape they want – and have it served up straight from a boy scout.

“The event is a highlight for some of the kids, they look forward to it,” said Garth Cave, the group commissioner for Cochrane First Scouting. “The proceeds are spent on subsidizing camps and other club costs, like a recent trip to the Rothney Astrophysical Observatory.”

Last year, the fundraiser helped the boys collect about a quarter of their annual budget.

Besides supporting the local boys troop, buyers will be supporting the Canadian company that supplies the timber, said Cave.

“The trees are purchased from a producer in Fort Steel, B.C.,” he added. “They are all natural, not from a tree plantation.”

In Cochrane, there are about 80 boys active in the scouting organization, said Cave, many of who will be out selling trees this season. The trees sell for $5 a foot and will be for sale in the parking lot of the Rexall Drug Store until Dec.21.
