The M.D. of Bighorn has come to an agreement to annex a parcel of land from Rocky View County (RVC), allowing for the completion of Township Road 252.
Rob Ellis, director of planning services for Bighorn, said the M.D. has been negotiating the 67-acre annexation with RVC since 2011 and that acquiring the land was necessary as Township Road 252 currently crosses through a portion of RVC land.
“Township Road 252 is a municipal standard road replacing a former Shell road, which ran through private lands and was not developed to a municipal standard,” Ellis said. “It is Bighorn’s intent to continue to allow the predominantly rural/agrarian types of uses of the proposed annexed lands.”
Richard Barss, senior planner for RVC, said that without the annexation the county would have liability and maintenance responsibilities for Township Road 252, and that the road does not service any RVC residents.
Ellis said both Bighorn and RVC submitted an annexation application and annexation agreement to the Municipal Government Board for review and approval.
No payment was required from Bighorn to RVC for the annexation, and there will be no tax increases for property owners located within the annexed land for a period of five years.
The parcel is located at the east boundary of Bighorn near Highway 68.
