Police believe a pedestrian killed by a semi on the TransCanada Highway may have been tending to a vehicle that was parked roadside.

A 54-year-old Calgary man was struck by a semi-trailer unit that was travelling westbound on Highway 1, said Cpl. Mel Calahasen of Cochrane RCMP. The crash occurred just before 3:30 p.m. March 25, less than a kilometre away from the Old Banff Coach Road overpass.

A Dodge truck, believed to be associated with the deceased, was parked on the shoulder of highway nearby, said Calahasen.

The man may have been trying to fix the truck when he was hit by the travelling semi, he added.

“We think the vehicle may have been having some kind of mechanical issue,” Calahasen remarked.

“Collision analysts and members are continuing to investigate and speak with witnesses.”

The victim succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead on scene.

Calahasen said Mounties are continuing to look into what factors may have contributed to the crash.

The name of the deceased has not been released.
