A young offender is facing arson charges after a police investigation into several suspicious fires on the Stoney Nakoda First Nation
Cochrane RCMP’s General Investigation Section laid three Criminal Code charges of arson on a 15-year-old male from Morley, said Cpl. Troy Savinkoff. The youth has also been charged with theft of a motor vehicle, break and enter and uttering threats.
The three arson charges include: two vehicles that were set ablaze in the townsite of Morley Dec. 12 and Dec. 23, along with a Dec. 13 structure fire that destroyed the Morley Paint Shop.
As the accused is a young offender, his name cannot be released.
The youth has been remanded in custody. He is expected to attend Cochrane Provincial Court Jan. 14.
Police continue to look into three fires, also occurring on the Nation, that have been deemed suspicious, said Savinkoff. The fires include two vehicle fires — one Nov. 15 and another Dec. 18 — along with a structure blaze that happened Dec. 25.
“We are noticing common threads between the fires,” said Savinkoff. “But at this point we’re still in the process of investigation.”
