A two-year-old was airlifted to Alberta Children’s Hospital Sept. 2 after being struck by a vehicle.
Cochrane EMS responded to Redwood Meadows at approximately 9:20 a.m. after a family member backed over a boy who was on his bicycle. Due to the injuries and distance to the hospital, Cochrane ground crews requested STARS Air Ambulance attend the scene.
Paramedics determined on-scene that the boy was struck by a pick-up truck reversing in the driveway.
Paramedics attended to the boy on scene as he had sustained a serious lower arm injury and other soft tissue injuries, but he was taken to hospital in serious but otherwise stable and non-life threatening condition.
RCMP stated alcohol was nota factor in the accident and charges are not expected.
Cochrane RCMP charged one impaired driver during the Tour of Alberta last Friday.
RCMP set up one kilometre west of town on Highway 1A to stop traffic when at approximately 1 p.m. police noticed a vehicle heading west bound on the closed highway.
After the being stopped a 19-year-old male from Stoney Nakoda First Nation was arrested and taken to Cochrane where his breath samples were nearly double the legal limit. There were also two other “highly-intoxicated” males in the vehicle, a 19-year-old and a 16-year-old, who were also arrested and transported to the detachment.
Other than the one incident, Const. Jennifer Brewer with the Cochrane RCMP, said the detachment had fewer calls and complaints this past weekend in comparison to the August long weekend.
The Cochrane RCMP had 185 different complaints over September long weekend, with approximately 36 of the calls directly related to traffic complaints, compared to the 200 different complaints on August long weekend with 20 collisions reported.
“The number of calls could have been lower because we had portions of the highway shut down on Friday, due to the Tour of Alberta – it takes out the number of complaints we get those times frames,” Brewer said.
If anyone witnesses any abnormal driving behaviour, or any other crimes is asked to please contact the Cochrane RCMP at 403-851-8000 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
