The Nakoda Youth Council is looking for new members to help with upcoming events and projects and the chance to be a part of a positive space for youth in the community.

“We’re looking for as many applicants as possible,” said Joey Makinaw-Ladelle.

Currently, Makinaw-Ladelle said the council is looking to work alongside the Morley Community School’s student council for some upcoming events. He also hinted at some potential Christmas activities.

“Probably a gingerbread house making competition and door decorating at the school,” said Makinaw-Ladelle.

Recently, the council participated in a presentation in the Town of Canmore where they shared their UN Delegation experience, as part of the town’s First Thursday Speaker Series.

Members have also had the opportunity to take part in enriching experiences including trips to the mountains, the annual Sioux Alliance Camp in the summer and opportunities to travel to conferences in North America on behalf of the younger Stoney generation.

The council was initiated in 2014 as a response to the high suicide rate among young people on the Nation. Three members who wanted to give hope and opportunities to the younger generation formed it.

The goal is to revitalize the Stoney culture and bridge the gap between youth and elders.

The deadline is Nov. 10 and applications are available at the Stoney Nakoda Resource Centre, Stoney Nakoda Office, Health Centre, School, Wesley Resource Centre and Chiniki Cap.
