Cochranite Anders Newman died late October during a hiking trip in B.C.

The 18-year-old went camping with a group of six friends on Oct. 24 in Strathcona Park with the plan to spend the next day hiking.

On Oct. 25 around 8:45 a.m., Newman fell from a steep cliff near Big Interior Mountain, where he lost his footing coming down a trail.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Newman had recently moved to Victoria where he was attending post-secondary school. The University of Victoria’s executive director, Joel Lynn, described Newman as “an extremely well-liked young man who had a promising future.”

The family wrote in his obituary that he “died doing what he loved – hiking in the beautiful outdoors.”

“He was the most kind-hearted, fun-loving, caring, compassionate and adventurous young man with an infectious smile and the cutest dimples. And we will never forget his amazing hugs that made you feel so loved.”

There was a celebration of Newman’s life hosted Oct. 31 at Bow Valley High School, and family and friends have set up at memorial page on Facebook named “In Loving Memory of Anders Newman.”
