A combination of dance, kickboxing, strength training, yoga, Pilates — and all that jazz.
Jazzercise has arrived in Cochrane, setting up shop four times a week in the Frank Wills Memorial Hall. Owner-instructor Amber Jensen will be at the helm.
“People always think of Jazzercise as it was in the ‘80s, with the big hair and the body suits,” she said with a laugh. “But it’s modernized. The music is up to date and the workout has changed — it’s more challenging.”
The hardest part, she added, is getting people to try the cardio and strength-building class. But once they get started, it’s hard to deny the results.
Jensen credits the workout with helping her shed 50 lbs following the birth of her first child — that was four years ago. She became certified as an instructor after her second child was born, nearly two years ago.
“I was hooked,” she remarked.
Jazzercise is constantly changing, which helps hold the interest of class participants. Every six weeks Jensen receives a package full of new routines and choreography.
“I offer high impact and low impact variations throughout the class,” said Jensen. “It doesn’t matter what your fitness level, experience, or what injuries you may have.”
The one-hour sessions begin with the cardio-portion of the Jazzercise program, followed by 10-15 minutes of strength training with hand-held weights. To end the class, participants will take to their yoga mats for a stretch session.
The exercises are performed to music, typically upbeat Top-40 songs.
Other than workout clothes, people should arrive to class with hand-held weights (Jensen recommended between those between five and 10 lbs), a yoga mat and a water bottle.
The grand opening of Jazzercise Cochrane was Jan. 7. Classes will run Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 8 p.m., and at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesdays and Fridays. Childcare will be available during morning sessions for a small fee.
Interested participants can purchase an unlimited monthly pass for $45, or buy a one-time drop-in pass for $12. Classes will run year round.
