Overnight Relay for Life looking for teams for June 7

Only a little more than a month remains before the third running of the Cochrane Relay for Life.

Only a little more than a month remains before the third running of the Cochrane Relay for Life. So, gather your family and friends, throw on some runners, and hit the floor of the Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre arena — all in support of the Canadian Cancer Society.

Already the 12-hour, overnight fundraiser has recruited nine teams and raised about $2,600 for the cause, said event co-chair Carol Tapsay.

The relay — open to all ages and abilities — will get underway at 7 p.m. June 7.

There remains ample time to register a team, which must be made up of eight to 10 participants. Though the walk will continue for 12 hours, only one person from the team needs to be on the track at any given time. The event will feature Zumba classes, games and a variety of entertainment for those who are waiting for their turn walking the track.

New this year is a special dinner, held free of charge, for cancer survivors and their caregivers. The dinner is slated to take place before the Relay for Life kicks off. The location for the dinner has yet to be announced.

The evening will launch with a celebration of survivors — who will accompany teams on the first lap of the evening. Luminaries will be lit later in the evening, in honour of those who succumbed to cancer. The relay will wrap up the morning of June 8 with talks of fighting back against the disease.

Last year, Cochrane’s Relay for Life raised about $36,000. This year, the goal is to raise $50,000.
