In January, Karri Berg told the Cochrane Eagle she wanted to see the town blanketed in pink.
And it appears the community outreach coordinator for awareness and prevention of violence at the Boys and Girls Club of Cochrane and Area is getting closer to achieving that goal.
For this year’s Pink Shirt Day, held today (Feb. 27), the local organization ordered 1,775 shirts — all in the spirit of the anti-bullying campaign. Well over her goal of selling more than 1,000 shirts.
“Last year we sold 750 shirts, so we’ve already beat that by 1,000 this year,” Berg said incredulously about the pink anti-bullying shirts.
About 150 of the shirts will be available for purchase at Canadian Tire. They come in both adult and child sizes and cost $10.
This is Cochrane’s third time running the awareness event, although this is the fifth year the initiative has run on a national level.
Pink Shirt Day was spearheaded by two Nova Scotia high school boys, Travis Price and David Shepherd, after witnessing a Grade 9 student being bullied for wearing a pink shirt.
Taking a stand, the teenagers went out and bought pink shirts, doling them out to schoolmates to wear. Thus, the first unofficial pink shirt day was born.
“It’s all about getting the awareness out there — it’s about starting a conversation,” said Berg.
Anti-bullying events will be cropping up around the town...
