A plane crash near the entrance to Calaway Park has landed a man in hospital with serious injuries.

Local RCMP members, along with EMS and crews from Rocky View County Fire Services, responded to the scene shortly after 3 p.m. May 1.

Reports indicate the pilot and lone occupant of the plane was taking off from the Calaway Park car lot when his plane collided, nose first, with a berm near the park entryway, said Cochrane RCMP Const. Francisco Ceron.

Ceron said the injured man — a 39 year old from Prince George, British Columbia — was heading back to his hometown at the time of the crash. The man was piloting a home-built, single-engine plane, a Storm S-280 two-seater.

The man had been contracted to work at the amusement park and had permission from park representatives to take off and land his plane in the parking lot while working there.

The Transportation Safety Board is looking into the crash with help from the Cochrane detachment.
