Relay for Life on horizon

Celebrating survivors. Remembering those who lost their battle. Fighting back.

Celebrating survivors. Remembering those who lost their battle. Fighting back.

These three themes will be on the docket as organizers gear up for the third running of Cochrane Relay for Life, a 12-hour, overnight fundraising event in support of the Canadian Cancer Society. It’s scheduled to occur at the Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre (SLSFSC) June 7, starting at 7 p.m.

“We run the event overnight to recognize the struggle of cancer patients and their caregivers — cancer never sleeps,” said co-chair Carol Tapsay. “It’s about raising money for the Canadian Cancer Society, but it’s also about raising awareness to help us fight back against the disease.”

The evening will kick off with a celebration of survivors, said Tapsay, with cancer survivors — all in various stages of treatment and recovery — joining participants for the opening lap.

Once darkness falls, luminaries will be lit in honour of those who have succumbed to the disease. Finally, in the morning, talks about fighting back against cancer will keep participants engaged and motivated.

“These themes are what keep people coming back,” said Tapsay, who became involved with the initiative after losing her mother to cancer. “The event is for a good cause and it’s fun, but it’s also moving and motivating.”

The relay is planned to take place in the SLSFSC arena, with a track set up along the outside edges, leaving the middle of the arena open for entertainment and tents. Participants register for the event in teams — each team must have at least one member walking the track at all times.

The event is open to all ages and abilities.

“This isn’t for elite athletes,” said Tapsay. “It’s for everyone. The only real physical requirement is that (participants) are able to get around the track — even if that means you’re pushed around in a wheelchair.”

Last year’s event raised about $36,000, said Tapsay. This year, the event aims to hit the $50,000 mark. Already the group has raised more than $3,000 thanks to the Boob Tour comedy show stop in town earlier this year.
