Remembrance Day ceremonies in Cochrane

The Cochrane Legion is inviting everyone to pay their respects to veterans and current service members during their Remembrance Day ceremony in town Nov. 11.

Steve Jordan, first vice-president of the Legion in Cochrane and Poppy Campaign chairperson, said that services commence 10 a.m. at Cochrane High School until 10:30 a.m., where speakers such as Pastor Bryn Thiessen from the Cowboy Trail Church will talk. The Cochrane Pipe Band will perform as well.

From the school, a procession will march down to the cenotaph near the Legion Hall, with official wreath-laying from 11-11:30 a.m. The public will then be allowed to lay wreaths after that time. A light lunch will then be held in the hall.

The Legion Hall will be open from 11:30 a.m.-6 p.m.

Jordan expects 500 to 600 people to attend services at the school and 200 to 300 at the cenotaph wreath-laying.

One hundred per cent of the money collected for the poppy drive will go towards providing care and services for veterans and their families.

Last year, Jordan said that they raised around $40,000, which he attributed to the outpouring of support after a lone gunman attacked Parliament Hill, leaving Corporal Nathan Cirillo dead while he guarded the National War Memorial. He expects between $25,000 to $30,000 to be raised this year.

Bethany Care Centre will also host their own service starting at 10:30 a.m. that day for their residents who served. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Cochrane Legion Ladies Auxiliary is holding a Remembrance Day poppy tea and bake sale Nov. 7.

The event goes 1-3 p.m. in the basement of Royal Canadian Legion #15, 114 Fifth Ave, Cochrane.

Everyone is welcome. Tickets are $5.
