On Dec. 11, Rocky View Schools (RVS) announced in a press release that all European educational excursions planned by RVS are cancelled.
“Our decision rests on the safety of both our students and staff,” said Don Hoium, Superintendent of Schools in a press release. “We have an obligation to ensure a safe and caring environment and will not risk the health and well-being of students or staff by allowing them to travel to European destinations.”
Cochrane High School had a trip planned to France/Spain in March that has been cancelled, according to Angela Spanier, RVS director of communications.
The decision was made after advice was given by the RVS insurance carrier, Marsh, which recommended against travelling to Europe.
“At this time, all international travels planned outside of European destinations will not be impacted. However, our jurisdiction will closely monitor travel advisories prior to the departure of student groups,” Hoium said.
Eight trips in RVS are impacted. Parent meetings are planned through the week of Dec. 14 to discuss possible alternative destinations and/or cancellation of the trips.
