Rocky View Schools (RVS) in the Cochrane area, and throughout the school district, are recognizing Remembrance Day a day early with Nov. 10 ceremonies at their primary, middle and high schools.

RVS Superintendent Don Hoium said it is important for students, parents and the community to connect to the sacrifice of those who fought for our freedom.

“All of our schools do participate in a Remembrance Day ceremony,” Hoium said. “That ceremony is to bring awareness to all of our students of the importance of the sacrifice veterans made over the years to provide us with the freedoms we experience every day.

“The ability to have freedom of speech and a democratic process. These are all things some gave their lives for us to have.

“Those messages will vary from primary up to our high school students. But they are all focussed on let’s appreciate what veterans have done.”

Hoium said the majority of Nov. 10 RVS ceremonies will involve community members attending the services. The services are held a day early in schools so students get Remembrance Day, Nov. 11, off to attend community services and events with their families.
