The countdown is on for the opening of the new kindergarten to Grade 8 school in Cochrane’s Sunset Ridge, set to open in September 2016, and Rocky View Schools (RVS) is looking for help from the public to find the perfect name for the new facility.

“We want people to feel like they are part-owners of our new schools in Rocky View,” said RVS board chair Colleen Munro. “What better way to draw on the community’s collective memory and wisdom than to ask for help in naming one of its public landmarks?”

With this in mind, RVS has created a ‘Name That School’ contest, open now until Mar. 2.

Participants can submit an entry indicating their proposed name for the new school, why the name is appropriate and participant contact information to Lisa Sandberg via email at [email protected], mail to her attention at the RVS Education Centre located at 2651 Chinook Winds Drive S.W., Airdrie, Alta., T4B 0B4, or by fax to 403-945-4011.

The ‘Name That School’ winner’s name will be inscribed on a plaque at the school.

Naming suggestions must follow the RVS Naming of Facilities policy, available online at rockyview.ab.ca.

The policy states the name selected should:

• Have significance for students, parents and he community or donor and reflect the 21st century vision of RVS;

• Be easily identifiable with the facility;

• Create a distinct identity relative to the names the names of other facilities in RVS or surrounding divisions;

• Consider prominent community members only posthumously;

• Consider long-term impacts to naming of future facilities in the community;

• Avoid specifying programs and/or grade configurations to provide for maximum flexibility in the future.

Once the contest closes Mar. 2, the RVS School Naming Committees will review entries and send recommendations to the board of trustees who will make the final decision.

The last Rocky View County school named with community consultation was Chestermere’s East Lake School in October 2013. The name was selected to refer to the location of the school, which is east of Chestermere Lake. Chestermere residents commonly reference the area as east of the lake.

The ‘Name That School’ entry form is now available for residents to view at rockyview.ab.ca by searching “name that school.”
