The students of Springbank Middle School will be bringing the famed chocolate factory to life during their musical production of Willy Wonka Jr.
“We're hoping this performance will be the first of many for the school, ” said Dan Hoch, school principal.
The play will run until May 9, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., in the school gym.
Parents are invited to the middle school's Grade 5 Parent Orientation Evening, which is set to run May 27 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. The event will get underway in the school's library area.
While attendance is not mandatory, principal Dan Hoch said the session is helpful for parents who are new to the middle school.
“We show parents around the school and let them know about our school policies, routines and expectations, ” he said. “We walk them through the differences between elementary school and middle school. ”
Students at Manachaban Middle School will be taking their learning on the road this month.
The Grade 5 students will be heading to Camp Kindle May 14-16, for three days filled with campfires, hiking and other adventures. Meanwhile, the Grade 7 students will be kept busy on their own outing - both the English and French Immersion classes will be taking respective overnight trips into the Alberta Badlands in Drumheller.
The Grade 8 students will be on the move for their annual Quebec trip, which will run May 11-17. The trip will take students to Montreal and Quebec City, for an adventure that aims to leave participants with fond final year memories and cultural learning experience.
The Grade 4 students at Elizabeth Barrett Elementary School will be presenting a musical performance of the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale, The Nightingale.
The classic tale will hit the stage at the school's gym at 7 p.m., May 29. Through song and dance, the young performers will entertain the audience with their version of the story of the Chinese Emperor who replaces his singing nightingale with a mechanical one. In the end the Emperor realizes, nearly too late, that true happiness cannot be bought.
Glenbow Elementary School students have committed to spending 30 minutes a day - for 30 consecutive days - outside connecting with nature.
The school is taking part in the David Suzuki Foundation's 30x30 Nature Challenge during the month of May.
“It's the idea of building healthy habits, and gaining ownership over the natural world, ” said Kara Vincent, a Grade 4 teacher at the elementary school.
During weekdays, students head outside for 30 minutes of out-of-classroom teaching sessions, said Vincent. On weekends, children are able to take their own interpretation of the challenge - building snow forts, having snowball fights, anything that gets them connecting with nature.
“It's important that we get outside and enjoy the nature we have, ” said A.J. Neil, a nine-year-old Grade 4 student.

Beginning at 4 p.m. May 8, Glenbow families and community members are invited to participate in the Glenbow Community Garden's spring facelift. Dress code features gardening gloves and rubber boots, and hard work will be rewarded with a barbecue dinner.
